The Lord’s way is not fair! birds.gif (1387 bytes)

This says the Lord:
You say, "The Lord’s way is not fair!"
Hear now, house of Israel:
Is it my way that is unfair, or rather, are not your ways unfair?
(words of the prophet, trying to warn the people before exile) Ezekiel 18:25

Have you ever had a little kid stamp their feet, cross their arms and scream IT’S NOT FAIR! Do you look at friends, relatives, neighbors and decide their lot in life is far better than yours? A lot of energy in life is wasted on what should be rather than what is.

The prophet, Ezekiel, worked among the chosen people from 593 BC to perhaps 563 BC. In many ways what he was begging the people to do fell on deaf ears. Then he had to regroup a discouraged, cynical group of exiles.

They were grumbling and mumbling:
Our economy was booming (at least for some of us). Our leaders made some astute military alliances. Why is God doing this to us? Why are we being punished?

Ezekiel did not mince any words:
God is punishing you because of your behavior. The poor among you were left to suffer. You were so focused on making money, that you never stopped your consumerism or neglecting the Sabbath. Your behavior has consequences, so what is so unfair about that?

A recent circular through cyberspace may be serving as a wake-up call for many of us who are caught in a mentality that needs some adjustments.

  • Funny how $50 "looks" so big when you take it to church, but so small when you take it to the market.
  • Funny how long it takes to serve God for an hour, but how quickly a team plays 60 minutes of football.
  • Funny how long a couple of hours spent at church is, but how short they are when watching a movie.
  • Funny how we can’t think of anything to say when we pray, but don’t have difficulty thinking of things to talk about to a friend.
  • Funny how we get thrilled when a football game goes in to overtime, but we complain when a sermon is longer than the regular time.
  • Funny how hard it is to read a chapter in the bible,  but how easy it is to read 100 pages of a best selling novel.
  • Funny how people want to get a front seat at any game or concert, but scramble to get a back seat at church services.
  • Funny how we need 2 or 3 weeks advance notice to fit a church event into our schedule, but can adjust our schedule for other events at the last moment.
  • Funny how hard it is for people to learn a simple gospel well enough to tell other, but how simple it is for the same people to understand and repeat gossip.
